About this deal

I’ve read both Close to Home (the first) and In the Dark (the second), and I couldn’t tell you which one is my favourite so far. A house fire in an upmarket area of North Oxford leads to the gruesome discovery of two dead children. When the two children were pulled from what was left of the house, one deceased, one critical, the police couldn’t work out where their mother or father were. I've always been a voracious reader and viewer of crime - I've learned so much from the outstanding writing that we now see on crime TV like Line of Duty or Broadchurch, and I've tried to recreate the experience of watching series like that for my readers. The father of the family involved in the fire, Michael Esmond, is an academic, but that's as close as it gets.

Everything wasn’t perfect in the Esmond household, and the reader discovers this through flashbacks. In my opinion this book is the weakest of the three I have read although it was still a captivating read. Gripping from the first page and not letting you go until the last word, we’re reunited with the characters we love. El foco principal se pondrá en el padre ya que este iba a dar una importante conferencia en Londres pero nada indica que vaya a presentarse. Even the arrogant, lazy git Quinn is easy to picture as he off loads tasks usually to the long suffering Baxter!

No Way Out is the utterly compelling third book in the Oxford based series by Cara Hunter featuring DI Adam Fawley and after a sensational second outing, this third book cements the author’s status as a rising star of some of the most compelling police procedurals about. Fawley himself takes an interesting role in this latest novel, his personal life having massive impact on his professional life, more so even than during the Daisy Mason case. Two children were dragged from the inferno: one, a toddler, was pronounced dead at the scene and the other, a boy on the cusp of his teens, died in hospital some days later. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. In a narrative that goes back and forth in time, we become intimately acquainted with the Esmond family that includes Michael's carefree brother, Philip, who spends time sailing round the world, Michael's university colleagues, Samantha's severe post-natal depression, their employment of Harry who tends to their garden.

There are twists right up to the end that surprised me, but they were appropriate, and worked beautifully. Various shots of the fire damage inside: the dining room, the stairs, some of the bedrooms, what remains of the furniture - most of it hefty and old-fashioned. También conocemos mucho más a todos los personajes de la serie, principalmente al inspector Fawley que no pasa por un buen momento personal. One thing that I have always appreciated in this series is that even though Adam Fawley has had some tragic things happen to him, he is still well adjusted and good at his job.Highly recommended and in common with the second outing, In The Dark, this is a twisty and absorbing police procedural that pulls no punches. The Christmas holidays, and two children have just been pulled from the wreckage of their burning home in North Oxford. I feel like the way it’s formatted keeps the pace from ever lagging and it also makes it so hard to put the book down. Detective Inspector Adam Fawley and his team, certain that the fire was set deliberately, start to dig into the family’s background and discover that money problems may well be at the root of the problem: the house has been in the father’s family for generations, but his grandfather’s cast-iron will ensures that he can never sell it.

I had just about everybody in the cast pencilled in as the murderer and still managed to get it wrong. The next Adam Fawley novel from Cara Hunter is pacy and twisted, an addictive read with a strong emotional core featuring as it does a family in peril. Y también me ha gustado que esta novela tiene algunas similitudes en estructura con ¿Quién se ha llevado a Daisy Mason? Michael has problems at home and at work, Samantha is struggling, Matty doesn’t get the attention he deserves and Zachery is constantly ill. The plot slowly unfolds as investigative results open up avenues that a team of expert detectives led by DI Fawley and his acting DS, Chris Gislingham will probe and dig.But as well as Fawley having to deal with another case involving young children, which is always a reminder of the loss of his own young son, we are also privy to the fact that he has recently separated from his wife which is something not many on his team know. The team are an important part of the story, and they work well together, compensating for each other’s weaknesses when required and, for the most part, being a close-knit, supportive group. The team dynamics have shifted since In the Dark – Quinn has been demoted, and Gislingham temporarily promoted in his place, which causes some tension between the two men, and puts a lot of pressure on Gislingham to prove himself both to his teammates and to his boss, Fawley. She's also excellent on grief and particularly the effect of losing a child: the Esmond boys' grandparents have to cope with losing their daughter and grandchildren and the investigation opens Adam Fawley's wound which is perhaps the deepest of all.
